Terry Fox Run
By Mary Georges and Alexander Marunde, Grade 9, SJB
Terry Fox is a national hero. His attempt to run across Canada on one leg while raising money for cancer research sets a great example for each and every Canadian. We should all contribute to the fight against a disease that affects all Canadians.
Every September millions of people and thousands of schools participate in the “Terry Fox Run” to raise money for cancer research. Citizens of Canada and the world participate in a run, organized to remember Terry Fox and to raise money for cancer research.
Terry Fox famously stated, “When I started this run, I said that if we all gave one dollar, we’d have $22 million for cancer research, and I don’t care man, there’s no reason that isn’t possible. No reason! If every single Canadian donated a dollar for cancer research, we could raise 25 million dollars.”
His passion and commitment to this cause was relentless and heroic. Like millions of other Canadians, the St. Jean de Brébeuf community has been inspired by Terry Fox. So many of our students, led by our Principal Mark Daly ran or walked 5km for this cause. This year our school raised the most money it ever has – over $9,000.
There is no doubt in our minds that the inspiration of Terry Fox will keep SJB running next year, increasing our commitment to cancer research and to our community as a whole.-
