We Are the Clay
By Rachel Meyers, Grade 12, STM
“We are the clay, you are the potter; we are all the work of your hand.” (Isaiah 64:8) The school theme, this year, is taken from the (italics) Book of Isaiah (italics) and it, very appropriately, represents our school. St. Thomas More is well recognized for its outstanding school spirit and constant strive for excellence. Each member of the school community brings his or her own gift and talent, which enrich the school community. These gifts have been given to us by God, the Potter, who has created us in His image. Equipped with these talents, students plunge into the countless activities STM has to offer: a future NHL player tries out for the school hockey team, a budding Broadway star auditions for the school play, a soon-to-be gaming engineer joins the programming club and an attentive biology student begins their path to one day performing open heart surgery.
Every student uses their God given abilities to enrich our community beyond our school’s borders. This is evident in the many charitable groups and clubs that have been formed at STM. Halloween for Hunger, the Christmas Miracle Campaign, the Baby Food Drive and Neighbour to Neighbour are just a few of the fundraisers the STM community is involved in that enrich the lives of the surrounding community.
Jesus enlightened us through his words, “Whatsoever you do to the least of my brothers that you do unto me.” (Matthew 25:31) It is evident that many of the students of STM have taken this message to heart through their involvement in the charitable activities they give their time and efforts to year after year. The motivation for these charitable works is rooted in the realization that we have been created in God’s image. God has made us unique, with our own special talents, to use in our lives and enhance the lies of those in our community. He is the Potter and we are all the work of His hand.-
